“In Africa pure music is rhythm. The first praises from human beings were requests for rain. The first rain drops defined the basic rhythm of African music in totally. And then, man improvised them into drums...“ (Léopold Sédar Senghor)
The photo exhibition “MAMA AFRIKA LE VILLAGE“ shows the senegalese life of musicians called Mama Afrika in their hometown Dakar. On the one hand the black and white photos reflect the senegalese lifestyle and on the other hand they give you the chance to step into an underrated music culture.
Mama Afrika is a group of percussionists founded in Senegal and now one of the most brilliant african groups in Cologne. The artists of Mama Afrika represent their various westafrican music traditions, but they never forget the importance of cultural exchange, which engenders more respect and tolerance.
Music is a universal language and can build a bridge across different cultures. The definition of music in Senegal is different from ours, because their music is involved in every aspect of life.
AZIZ KUYATEH
The critically acclaimed kora player Aziz Kuyateh is a member of a large westafrican family of griots. The griots are part of an ancient traditional musican caste, in which historical developments combined with poetry, political flair and musical talents are passed on from generation to generation. The westafrican griots are storytellers, rhetoric artists, historians and custodians of culture in many African societies. Their songs cover a wide range of themes, from glories of the past to current issues affecting their society. Traditional instruments like kora or balaphon accompany their stories and performances. Aziz Kuyateh has lived in Frankfurt for a couple of years and in his music he is connecting his german experiences with the african tradition. The results of this cultural mix were realised in different projects like Jam ak Jam, Groove Syndicate and in the collaboration with Mama Afrika.
