Doin' the maths: two times four on 27/6

The month of June is always a good time for catching live concerts in many parts of the world as gigs are planned to take place in the weeks before holidays start. This year the festival scene in western Europe is shook by a large number of African rap acts coming over. In a case of unfortunate coincidence there are two African rap festivals happening on the same night (Friday 27 June) in Amsterdam and Brussels, at less than three hours distance from each other. 'Unfortunate' because all these artists combined would have made an even better line-up of a bigger pan-African hip hop festival. In this case, African hip hop heads in the area will simply have to choose between the two programs. Since we were somewhat involved in the Belgian festival, we'll report from there, but we're also going to hook up with the emcees that are presented in neighbouring Holland.

Couleur Cafe, Brussels
The annual Belgian festival Couleur Cafe has teamed up with the Jacques Gueux fondation, an organization responsible for many hip hop events in Brussels, to bring over four African rap crews from all corners of the continent. The line-up, partly based on our suggestions, consists of Godessa (female trio from South Africa with live band), Nigga Nation (legends from Ivory Coast), X Plastaz (Maasai hip hop from Tanzania) feat. dj 360, and RakTak Squad (Senegal).
Other artists that day at the festival include Salif Keita, Jimmy Cliff and Terence Trent d'Arby, and the next days Tony Allen, Manu Dibango, Israel Vibration and many more.

Amsterdam Roots
Another well known festival responds to the call of African rap with a dope line-up representing French Africa: Jëf Wareef & Bayefall (ragga-hip hop from Senegal), Fresk (Congo), Kill point (Guinee) and Pee Froiss (pioneers of Senegalese hip hop).
Other artists that night at Amsterdam Roots include Maalesh (Comores) and Omar Pene & Super Diamono (Senegal) and Oscar d'Leon (Venezuela), while the other days Ozomatli, Bembeya Jazz, Samira Said and others will be part of the program.
Also see the <a href="http://www.amsterdamroots.nl" target=_blank>Amsterdamroots.nl website. Pee Froiss will also be playing other dates including Africalia in July, while Jef Wareef will still be in Holland for 3 months - mail their management for bookings!
